Aftermath
Only a handful of people were punished for the awful wrongdoings of the Japanese. Specifically, Tani Hisao received the death sentence on April 26th, 1947 (Chen, 2004). Hisao was the commander of the 6th Division. He denied that the 6th Division troops did no wrong. When he was sentenced, he took his nail clippings and 3 strands of hair, tied them in his hankerchief and sent them back to Japan with an attached poem (Chen, 2004). Six other "Class A" war criminals were executed. Also 30 key Japanese commanders were executed (No author, 2007).

When it was all said and done with, there was an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people dead. Soon after the way ended, the commanders of the Japanese army and his liutenants were tried and convicted for their crimes and executed (history.com staff, 2009). While there are still some people who refuse to believe that the Nanking Massacre even occured, others will remember this horrific event forever. It is crucial to learn from our history, and history of others, so it will not be repeated.
