In an interview, she says, "It was my father who went to open the door and the Japanese soldiers, with guns already loaded, shot my father as soon as he opened." There were lots of families staying in her home for protection. All the families hid. She can remember her mother and sister being dragged out from underneath the table. Her mother was gang raped by 12 men and killed. Her sister was stabbed to death. The Imperial were letting bombs go off, pounding doors down, etc. The city was in total ruins. 50,000 Japanese troops marched into where Xia lived. Xia and a neighbor survived the ambush and survived on scaps of food for 10 days. An older couple soon found them and took them to the International Safety Zone, where they then stayed (China Daily, 2005).
